St. Augustine Men's Choir

The Men’s Choir is the main liturgical choir at St. Augustine. The 40 voice choir sings on a weekly basis from September to May, primarily at the 9:00 AM Mass on Sundays. The Men’s Choir continues their over 117-year tradition of fine four-part men’s literature in the service of the Church. The Men’s Choir sings a wide repertoire of music, from Chant-like Latin motets all the way to modern, contemporary works and everything in-between. With quarterly “Feed Nights” and an annual picnic, the Men’s Choir is also active as a social group. As the choir is cross-generational, anyone man high school aged and older is invited, and encouraged, to become a part of the St. Augustine Men’s Choir. Rehearsals are on Wednesdays from 7:00 to 8:30 PM in the balcony.

A Few Little-Know Facts about the Men's Choir

  • The St. Augustine Men's Choir was formed in 1907 to comply with the 1903 "Moto Propro" of Pope Pius X and the directive of the U.S. Bishops. The choir sang for the first time on Easter Sunday of that year.
  • St. Augustine Men’s Choir is one of the oldest full-time Roman Catholic Men's Choir in the nation.
  • The Men’s Choir is the oldest continuously-functioning organization in Minster. We hold regular meetings and pay yearly dues.
  • There have been over 191 singers (directors excluded) on the membership lists from 1907 to the present. Counting past and present members, there is over 3,393 years of combined service to St. Augustine Church.
  • The Men's Choir has presented five major musicals: "Captain Van der Hum" (January 13th, 1925: all men), “Old Kentucky Minstrel” (February 10th, 1930: all men), "The Mikado" (January 8th, 1948), "Pirates of Penzance" (October 21st thru 23rd, 1951), and "H.M.S. Pinafore" (June 14th thru 16th. 1957).

Mixed Choir

The Mixed Choir, of around 75 voices, is a product of the men from the Men’s Choir joining with the Women's Choir to sing four-part choir repertoire. The Mixed Choir sings at the 9:00 AM Mass on the first Sunday of the month. The Mixed Choir also sings on major holidays, such as Christmas, Easter, and Oktoberfest weekend. Like the Men’s Choir, the Mixed Choir is a cross-generational group; anyone high school or older is invited to take part. Rehearsals are generally on Wednesdays from 7:00 to 8:00 PM on the third and fourth Wednesdays of the month in the balcony. This schedule is subject to seasonal change.

Women's Choir

The Women's Choir of St. Augustine is made up of 35 ladies who sing primarily with the Mixed Choir and occasionally as a stand-alone three-part treble choir. Similar to the Men's and Mixed Choirs, the Women's Choir sings a wide variety of repertoire in many different styles. Membership is open to any woman, high school age and older. Rehearsals for the Women's Choir are usually held on the same Wednesday evenings that the Mixed Choir rehearses.

Children's Choir

The Children’s Choir at St. Augustine is a group of 60 made up of girls and boys, third to eighth grade, from our parish. The Children’s Choir sings the School Mass every Wednesday at 8:00 AM. In addition, the children sing one Sunday Mass each liturgical season from, including major church holidays. The Children’s Choir rehearses on Tuesday afternoons after school until 4:30 PM. Transportation from school to church via St. Augustine/St. Joseph Cluster Church Buses is provided.

Folk Group

Susan Winner, Director

The Folk Group is comprised of approximately fifteen men and women from our parish. The group is accompanied by piano, guitars, flute, and various percussion instruments. While the Folk Group sometimes plays traditional hymns, the group is centered on contemporary sacred music. The Group plays at the 11:00 AM Mass on the first and third Sundays and at the 5:00 PM Mass on the second and fourth Saturdays of the month-September through May. Rehearsals are on Tuesday evenings from 7:00 to 8:15 PM in the Sanctuary.

Brass Ensemble

The Brass Ensemble joins the Mixed Choir on some of the festive solemnities celebrated at St. Augustine—Christmas, Easter, and Oktoberfest weekend, in particular. The instruments join with the organ and the choir to give fitting praise to the Lord through music. The Brass Ensemble consists of two trumpets, a French Horn, a trombone, and a tuba.

Resurrection Choir

The Resurrection Choir sings for funeral liturgies at St. Augustine. Membership is open to all men and women who are available during the week to sing. Rehearsal is very minimal throughout the year.

Bell Choir

Ken Thieman, Director

The Bell Choir rings their praises to the Lord with our three-octave Schulmerich handbell set. Rehearsals are in the balcony from 7:00 PM to 8:30 PM on the second and third Thursdays of the month. The Bell Choir plays select Masses each year and is very sensitive to members' schedules. Membership is open to all anyone with an interest in playing: music reading skills are helpful, though not required. Those interested in participating in the Bell Choir should contact Jared Post who will put you in contact with the director.

High School Choir

Those interested in participating in the High School Choir should contact Jared Post. Currently, the High School Choir is inactive, but it has the potential to begin activities again, if there is an increased level of interest.
